All individuals are required to register and pay for birds by the TUESDAY BEFORE each training day. At all other times, the registration form will be unavailable. Keystone members will receive notification via email when registration is open.
If you are new to NAVHDA, there are some things you should understand about training days. Most importantly, like all other chapters, Keystone is an all-volunteer organization. No chapter member receives any compensation for assisting at training days. They are simply donating their time, and you will be expected to do the same. Why join? As a chapter, we coordinate access to training grounds, obtain proper permits, and maintain an extensive inventory of training gear/tools. For a nominal membership fee, Keystone essentially provides everything needed to train your own pointing dog to the NAVHDA standard. Additionally, many Keystone members are seasoned NAVHDA participants and trainers and can provide a lot of sage advice, training assistance, guidance, etc. But the heart of the chapter is members helping members. All members, regardless of experience level, are expected to contribute time to helping at training days. Help, and you will receive help. Please take a couple of minutes to read through the Additional Training Information and Training Day Prep provided below.
Prior to the start of every training day, members are expected to check-in and gather the birds that they ordered. Conducting check-in is an easy way to volunteer and meet chapter members. You'll also learn to band birds and appropriately pull flight feathers (ducks).
Planting birds is vital to a successful training day. There are many ways to plant birds, and many times, different ways will need to be employed based on the dog and what the handler is working on. Planting birds is a necessary skill for all members to develop.
Often times at training days, birds need to be run to the field in order to be planted ahead of the next dog/handler. This is a very easy way for newbies to help out as it's a great way for those with little experience to get involved and help.
Putting ducks out is essential when training at the water. There is a lot to consider when planting ducks, especially the dog's experience level with ducks and duck search. Always coordinate with the handler. While in the kayak, you must have a whistle and life jacket.
At the start of each training day, the Training Director will go over the schedule for the day. This will dictate what equipment needs removed from the trailer and taken to and setup at the appropriate location. This a great way to learn about the equipment and how it is used.
Gunning for handlers is a very important role, and one the chapter takes very seriously. To gun (shoot live ammo) at any Keystone function, you MUST be an approved gunner...there are requirements and a formal process to receive this distinction.
The Keystone Chapter holds training days roughly every other week, March through August. Training dates may be subject to change. Please check Training Schedule before registering.
A typical training day will go something like this:
Please come prepared. Our Checklist for Training Days can be very helpful. We strongly encourage you to arrive early to give your dog/s a chance to get out of the vehicles and to get yourself organized. The Training Director will prepare running orders in an attempt to give all dogs their time in the field and at the water. Regardless of running order or experience level, ALL MEMBERS are expected to volunteer to help out wherever possible. Please plan to stay until the end of the training day.
